What to Expect During a Preventative Care Appointment at Bahama Road Veterinary Hospital

Preventative care is the foundation of lifelong health for your pet. These routine visits are more than just vaccines—they’re a chance for your veterinary team to catch potential health issues early, discuss your pet’s overall well-being, and help them live their happiest, healthiest life.

Here’s what you can typically expect during a preventative care appointment:

1. Warm Welcome and Check-In

When you arrive, our team will greet you and get your pet checked in. We may ask about any changes you’ve noticed at home—eating habits, behavior, activity level, or anything else you’ve been concerned about.

2. Comprehensive Physical Exam

A veterinarian will perform a full nose-to-tail exam. This includes checking your pet’s eyes, ears, mouth, teeth, skin, coat, heart, lungs, abdomen, joints, and more. It’s also a great opportunity to assess your pet’s weight and body condition.

3. Vaccinations and Parasite Prevention

Depending on your pet’s age, lifestyle, and medical history, they may receive vaccines or boosters. We’ll also review parasite prevention, including heartworm, flea, and tick protection, and make recommendations tailored to your pet’s needs.

4. Lab Testing (When Recommended)

Routine lab work like blood tests, fecal exams, or urine tests may be recommended—especially for senior pets, pets on long-term medications, or those showing subtle changes. These tests help us catch problems early before your pet shows signs of illness.

5. Nutrition and Lifestyle Discussion

We’ll talk about your pet’s diet, exercise routine, behavior, and any changes at home. This is your time to ask questions—no concern is too small.

6. Plan for Ongoing Care

Before you leave, we’ll go over any follow-up care, refill prescriptions if needed, and schedule your pet’s next visit. Our goal is to work with you to build a personalized care plan.

Preventative care visits are one of the best investments you can make in your pet’s health. They allow us to be proactive, not reactive—and that means a better quality of life for your furry family member.

If you have any questions or want to schedule your pet’s next appointment, we’re just a call or click away.
